How It Started

Sutter West Bay Medical Group (SWBMG) was incorporated in 2003, but our roots go back much further—anchored in a long tradition of research, education, and innovation.  In 1969, two surgeons at Pacific Presbyterian Medical Center—now Sutter Health’s California Pacific Medical Campus (CPMC)—performed the first successful kidney transplant at a community hospital.

A few years later Barry Levin, MD, joined CPMC as a transplant nephrologist. Together with Martin Brotman, MD, beloved former CEO of CPMC, he helped envision a hospital-based medical group that combined academic rigor with community-based care.

That early idea brought together 10 specialties and 67 doctors came together as Physician Foundation Medical Associates. Led by transplant surgeon Robert Osorio, MD, the group partnered closely with CPMC from the very beginning to build a culture that blended high-acuity, quaternary referral care with an academic feel.

As the region grew, so did we. In partnership with Sutter health, the medical group expanded primary and secondary care services across San Francisco and Northern California, strengthening access and continuity for patients.

Today, Sutter West Bay Medical Group is a multi-shareholder organization with more than 50 specialties. We continue to advance research, participate in clinical trials, and serve as faculty for multiple residency and fellowship programs. Our physicians provide primary and secondary care in the community, as well as tertiary and quaternary care to patients from Northern California and beyond—remaining true to the innovative spirit that shaped our earliest days.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

At Sutter West Bay Medical Group, we are committed to building an inclusive and open environment where patients, team members, and staff are treated with equality, dignity and a sense of belonging.

Healthcare disparities and unequal access to high-quality care are challenges we work to address every day. We recognize these as persistent issues in medicine and meet them with a sustained commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We address them through our clinical work, research, education, and recruitment practices. Our goal is to build a medical group that reflects the diversity of the patients and communities we serve.

We pledge to provide high quality, personalized care and access to all regardless of identity or background.
