
Dr. Yvonne Cheng graduated from Occidental College with a BA in biochemistry. She earned her MD degree from Tulane University School of Medicine and completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Chicago and a fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Dr. Cheng also received MPH, and PhD degrees in Epidemiology from the University of California, Berkeley, with an emphasis in causal inference/machine learning.
While pursuing a PhD from UC Berkeley, Dr. Cheng served as Assistant Professor in Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at UCSF. She was the Medical Director for the Diabetes and Pregnancy Program from 2010-214, the Fellowship Program Director for Maternal-Fetal Medicine at UCSF from 2010-2014, and as Associate Professor from 2012-2014. Dr. Cheng joined the Sutter West Bay Medical Group in 2014. She served as the Medical Director for the Diabetes and Pregnancy Program at CPMC from 2014-19, and the Director of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine program from 2015-19. In 2017, Dr. Cheng helped expand the Maternal-Fetal Medicine in-patient services from CPMC to Alta Bates Medical Center (ABMC), Ashby campus in Berkeley, and Dr. Cheng has been serving as the Medical Director for Perinatal Medicine at ABMC and as the Medical Director for the Perinatal Center Clinic since 2017. Dr. Cheng joined the Sutter West Bay Medical Group Board of Directors in 2019.
Dr. Cheng continues to purse perinatal outcomes research, with a focus on labor management, decreasing cesarean delivery, and racial/ethnic disparities. She has authored or coauthored over 110 peer-reviewed research papers, including publications in the New England Journal of Medicine, and Journal of American Medical Association, with collaborations nationally and internationally. She served as Associated Editor for Journal of Perinatology from 2014-2022, and she continues to serve as Peer Reviewer for the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Cheng is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and a member of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Pacific Coast Obstetrics and Gynecology Society, American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, Society for Pediatric and Perinatal Epidemiologic Research.
